The iconic Bordeaux event and a historical gem for Beam, the Jumping International de Bordeaux will celebrate its 52nd edition from February 6 to 9. A must-attend gathering for the elite international riders and a stage of the World Cup in show jumping, it attracts passionate fans for an event with a strong regional impact. We speak with Sabine Zaegel, Director of the event, who discusses the remarkable growth of this international competition and the success of the Bordeaux Horse Show, now one of the key annual events for equestrian enthusiasts.

How do you perceive the evolution and development of the Jumping International since its beginnings?

When Beam took over its organization in 1996, the aim was to instill a unique spirit focused on sporting excellence. Thirty years later, the event has grown, evolved, and innovated, while preserving its personality, conviviality, and loyalty to its DNA: top-level sport. The Jumping is renowned for the quality of its competitions, enjoying the loyalty of both international riders and its audience. Beyond this foundation, we have enhanced the program with new highlights that have become true blockbusters today. For example, the Friday evening indoor derby or the major opening show on Thursday night, which has welcomed prestigious equestrian schools and, more recently, the creation of a dressage battle in the second half.

At the same time, every component of the Jumping has expanded, whether it’s seating capacity, hospitality spaces (partner boxes), or the Bordeaux Horse Show itself. Today, over the four days of the Jumping, we welcome 74,500 attendees, host 17 international events on the main arena, involve 300 people in the organization, and mobilize 200 volunteers. There are 600 riders and more than 700 horses. Audience numbers grow by 5% annually. As organizers, it’s incredibly satisfying to see such progress!

The Jumping International de Bordeaux attracts a loyal and passionate audience every year. How does the event maintain this unique connection with its spectators?

Our DNA stems from equestrian practice and the passion it inspires. Visitors—avid connoisseurs and loyal to the event—know that a promise awaits them each year in Bordeaux, punctuated by key moments. The Jumping program reflects the excellence of the equestrian industry, particularly through its flagship discipline: World Cup show jumping, the most coveted by top riders. Moreover, in eventing, the Jumping International de Bordeaux was the first to organize an indoor cross-country competition, adapting the discipline to indoor constraints. This brings both emotion and an unmatched ambiance to the audience, which is exactly what they seek at the Jumping: the thrill of top-level sport, intensity, and the gathering of a passionate community.

Additionally, the Jumping is a moment of wonder, with a spectacular equestrian show to kick things off. After hosting the Cadre Noir in 2024, we will welcome “Sueño” on Thursday, February 6, a creation led by two renowned equestrian artists, Frédéric Pignon and Magali Delgado.

The Salon du Cheval, which emerged later, is now one of the largest events of its kind in France. How has it carved out its place?

Since its acquisition by Beam in 1996, the Bordeaux Horse Show has truly taken shape and developed its own identity. It has undergone remarkable growth and is now one of the most significant horse fairs in France. Aligned with equestrian sports, it offers a comprehensive and targeted selection, bringing together nearly 250 exhibitors: rider equipment, transport, horse care, feed, and leisure activities. Two arenas host regional competitions, shows, and demonstrations of equestrian disciplines.

Today, the event aims to reach a wide audience—and it succeeds! Whether you are a novice or an enthusiast, the Horse Show is a gateway to discovering all facets of the horse world.

The success of the Jumping also highlights its economic impact on the region. Could you tell us more about this?

While the event enjoys international exposure, its core audience primarily comes from the greater southwest region. The event supports the equestrian industry in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, one of the top three equestrian regions in France. On a local scale, the Jumping generates economic benefits for the tourism sector (accommodation, dining), local subcontractors, and regional businesses that exhibit. Its media coverage also contributes to Bordeaux’s international influence, with 650 hours of TV and streaming broadcasts worldwide!
