Here's a start-up that's got it going on! This nugget from Bordeaux collects biowaste from professionals by bike, and recycles it locally as 100% natural compost. You may already have seen it at the 2022 Foire Internationale de Bordeaux or Vinitech-Sifel... and you'll be seeing it again next February at the Jumping International de Bordeaux!
Collecting bio-waste is great, but reducing its carbon footprint to zero is even better, and turning it back into 100% natural, local compost is TOP!
That's the challenge that Bordeaux-based start-up BicyCompost is brilliantly meeting.
BicyCompost collects the bio-waste produced by professionals (restaurants, grocery shops, cafés, etc.) by bike, without emitting any CO2. It is then transformed into high-quality compost by their partner Pena. This 100% natural compost from Bordeaux is then distributed free of charge to market gardeners in the region to encourage local agriculture.
It's a great alternative to treatment methods that have serious consequences for our environment and our quality of life. Every year in the Bordeaux metropolitan area, 65,000 tonnes of food waste are transported across the city by lorry to end up in the incinerator.
How does it work?
- Your establishment generates bio-waste (peelings, food scraps, bones, fish, coffee grounds, etc.).
- Every week, BicyCompost collects all your bio-waste from your premises by bike.
- Your organic waste is transformed locally into compost at their partner Pena Environnement in Saint Jean d'Illac.
- The compost is distributed free of charge to market gardeners and partner associations to promote local agriculture and grow good vegetables.
BicyCompost in figures
- 250 tonnes of bio-waste recycled
- 115 tonnes of CO2 saved
- 11 jobs created
BEAM-approved collection
BicyCompost also travels to events in the Bordeaux area. They had the opportunity to walk the aisles of the Parc des Expositions at two of our flagship events in 2022: the Foire Internationale de Bordeaux and Vinitech-Sifel to collect organic waste. And we'll be delighted to welcome them to the Jumping International de Bordeaux from 2 to 5 February.
