Interview

Jumping International de Bordeaux "It's the emotion of great sport that the public come for".

An emblematic event in Bordeaux and Beam's historic flagship, Jumping International de Bordeaux will be celebrating its 52nd anniversary from 6 to 9 February. A not-to-be-missed event for the world's elite riders and a stage in the Jumping World Cup, it attracts enthusiasts for an event with a strong local impact. We spoke to Sabine Zaegel, Director of the event, about the growth of this international competition and the success of the Bordeaux Horse Show, which has become one of the most important annual events for equestrian enthusiasts.

How do you see Jumping International evolving and developing since its beginnings?

When Beam took over the organisation of Jumping International in 1996, we wanted to create a unique spirit based on sporting excellence. 30 years later, the event has grown, evolved and innovated with the times, but it has also managed to retain its personality, its conviviality and remain true to its DNA: top-level sport. Jumping remains renowned for the quality of its competitions, and we have the loyalty of international riders and our public. As well as preserving this base, we've worked on our programming with new events that have become real blockbusters. I'm thinking, for example, of the Friday evening indoor derby or the inclusion of a major show at the opening of the Thursday evening, which enabled us to welcome the top equestrian schools, and more recently the creation of the dressage battle in the second half.

At the same time, every aspect of Jumping has continued to grow, from the capacity of the grandstands and hospitality areas to the extension of the Salon du Cheval. Today, over the 4 days of Jumping, there are no fewer than 74,500 people in attendance, 17 international events on the main track, 300 people involved in its organisation and 200 volunteers. There are 600 riders and over 700 horses. In terms of audience figures, attendance is up by 5% every year. As an organiser, it's extremely satisfying to see such growth!

Jumping International de Bordeaux attracts a loyal and passionate audience every year. How does the event manage to maintain this unique communion with its spectators?

Our DNA is rooted in equestrianism and the passion it inspires.  These visitors, fervent connoisseurs and fans of the event, know that a promise awaits them every year in Bordeaux, punctuated by a series of highlights. The Jumping programme is a testament to the excellence of the equestrian industry, particularly through its flagship discipline: show jumping at the World Cup stage in Bordeaux, the most coveted event for the world's greatest riders. In eventing, Jumping International de Bordeaux was the first to organise an indoor cross-country event. We've adapted the discipline to the constraints of indoor riding. It's an opportunity for us to bring emotion and sympathy to events with a particularly memorable atmosphere. Because that's exactly what the public is looking for at Jumping: the emotion of great sport, the intensity and the togetherness of a community.

At the same time, Jumping represents the wonder of an opening equestrian show. Following in the footsteps of the Cadre Noir in 2024, on Thursday 6 February we will be welcoming ‘Sueño’, a creation by two great equestrian artists, Frédéric Pignon and Magali Delgado.

The Salon du Cheval, which came into being later, is now one of the biggest events of its kind in France. How did it find its place?

Since it was taken over by Beam in 1996, the Bordeaux Horse Show has really taken shape and developed its own identity. It has undergone remarkable growth, and is now one of the biggest horse shows in France. In tune with the sport of horse-riding, it offers a comprehensive, targeted range of products and services from nearly 250 exhibitors, including equipment for riders, transport, care and feed for horses, as well as leisure activities. Two racetracks host regional competitions, shows and demonstrations of equestrian disciplines.  Today, the event aims to reach a wide audience, and it's working! Whether you're a novice or an enthusiast, the Show offers you the chance to discover every facet of the world of horses.

Jumping's success is also reflected in its economic impact on the region. Can you tell us a bit about that?

While the event benefits from international exposure, its catchment area is mainly in the South-West. The event supports the equestrian industry in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, which is one of the top 3 most equestrian regions 1. On a regional scale, Jumping generates economic spin-offs for the tourism industry (accommodation, catering, etc.), local sub-contractors and the regional companies that exhibit. The event also generates media coverage, helping to raise the profile of Bordeaux beyond our borders, thanks to 650 hours of international TV/streaming!
