Since 2021, we have been hosting 3 hives and 75,000 bees at the Bordeaux Exhibition Centre. It's our small contribution to preserving biodiversity. And to accompany us on this wonderful adventure is a passionate and exciting beekeeper, Eric Recalt from l'Abeille au Bois Dormant.
They're back, much to the delight of BEAM and its staff. Our housemates have taken up residence at the Parc des Expositions. For this new season, there are around 75,000 bees spread over 3 hives. The aim is to increase the number of swarms to double their numbers at the height of summer. Every week, l'Abeille au Bois Dormant visits them to maintain the apiary. A small group of employees is even allowed to accompany the beekeeper to watch the various operations and gain a better understanding of the need to protect our bees.
In 2022, we are proud to have produced 105 kg of honey from our first harvest. A polyfloral honey with hints of acacia, much appreciated by the BEAM team!
The Sleeping Bee
Behind this evocative name lies Eric Récalt, a passionate beekeeper and harvester. With his 85 hives, he produces forest honey in the Médoc and Pays de Montaigne. He has also developed a business sponsoring beehives in the Médoc, Bordeaux and the Dordogne.
How does it work?
After a feasibility study, L'Abeille au Bois Dormant comes and sets up the apiary in March. L'Abeille au Bois Dormant takes care of the administrative formalities and the upkeep of the apiary (changing wax frames, cleaning, treatment, etc.). The bees are then harvested at the Abeille au Bois Dormant honey factory, and the honey is potted 15 days later.
